Fighting for my friends

My morning routine is pretty predictable. I wake, let the dog out, feed her, grab a cup of coffee for myself and head to the computer. I check my work email, my personal email and then I log onto Facebook to see what my friends are up to. Usually what I find there is fun and helps to start my day with a smile, but not this morning. This morning I saw a wall post from my niece who is diligently working her way through college final exams, stating that her "heart is with her mom". Her mom is fighting breast cancer. I had an email exchange with her mom just last week that said she was doing fine. The next post I saw was from my friend Angela. She said she was headed to St. Louis today with her 4 year old son, who is fighting leukemia, for a round of chemo...she was worried about the weather for her long drive. Just last weekend, she was posting about how she and her sons helped pack boxes of gifts for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and how wonderful it was to see her son on Santa's lap this year with a smile and a full head of hair. As I read these posts, not only did my heart ache but more importantly, realization and my conviction grew.

The realization was that cancer didn't sleep, as I slept - it continued to affect the lives of those I love. It still continued to rob them of what should be a joyous time and plague them with worry when they should be making wondrous memories.

The conviction is that we must find ways to win each battle against cancer, and the fact is that it's not going to happen without funding.

  1. How touching Lori. It seems that no ones lives are not touched by cancer any more. Cancer has been a part of my families lives. My father died when he was 64 of cancer that he battled against for 30 years, and more recently 2 sister in laws are survivors. Sadly, my cousin suffered from the age of 12 till he died at 21, of Hodgkins cancer, which now is quite treatable and seldom fatal, due to advances from research. So I applaud, admire and support your effort wholeheartedly Lori.
